Alice Gillham, born in Cape Town South Africa, is a classically trained pianist and flautist and an award-winning academic scholar with a Bachelor of Music Degree and a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology (cum laude), both from the University of Cape Town. While at university she won various academic awards including the Kirby Award for the most distinguished postgraduate thesis of her graduating year.
Her enduring love affair with music started at a very young age when at four years old she learnt to read music before learning to read words.
Today she is an experienced and respected composer, producer and lecturer, whose interests encompass a wide range of genres from classical music, jazz, pop, RnB and folk to rock. Passionate about the environment, she likes to explore and integrate the sounds and landscapes found in nature into her music. “Africa, with its immense skies and diverse landscapes that stretch into distant horizons, is one of my most significant sources of inspiration. “
She also has a deep interest in music in its power to illuminate the stories told in different cultures and communities around the world. “Wherever and whenever we feel or experience great or challenging moments in our lives, that is when we need music.”
She has produced and taught many South African artists and stars and has worked with musicians, artists, producers and composers in Australia, Germany, New York and London. While still at University with the aim of sharing her love of music with others, she presented her own show on Fine Music Radio (South Africa’s classical music radio station.)
For the same reason she founded the Africa Voices Trust in 2011, a South African non-profit foundation created to support the development of highly talented young African musicians. The Trust has changed the lives of many young artists and has produced a whole new generation of stars.
In 2014, she stepped out of general commercial production to focus primarily on Composition (Musical Theatre, Movie Scoring, and larger Production Works).
In 2016, she founded the company Calling Me Home (Pty) Ltd and in 2017 and 2018 wrote and produced the highly successful musical opera Calling Us Home, which had its development runs in Johannesburg and Cape Town’s state theatres where it achieved full standing ovations for every one of its previews and public performances.
In 2019 she began writing Clarence Square – a new grand scale musical set in Toronto at the turn of the last century.
Alice is signed to Sony/ATV and her music has been described by industry and audience members as; ‘deeply moving’, ‘epic’, ‘a totally unexpected fusion of classical and contemporary’, ‘bewitching’ but most of all as ‘completely addictive.’
All projects are aligned under the production company Shy Music (Pty) Ltd.
