"The Africa Voices Trust opened my heart to the need of giving back. I had this LIFE CHANGING experience from people who wanted to give back and create leaders within the entertainment industry - and it is now my duty to do the same."
Martin Venter was born in the heart of the high veld in Witbank, Mpumalanga. In 2010 he traded the coal-mine-city for Table Mountain. Surviving seven winters in Cape Town, Martin now has the official status of Capetonian.
His love for the entertainment industry started at a very young age when he was part of school productions and festivals. But it was only at the age of 17 while touring with the production Who To Trust, that Martin realized: this is it.
Shortly thereafter he studied drama and almost instinctively started creating his own work ranging from theatre pieces to short films.
Even though he had the opportunity to be part of the Mpumalanga Youth Choir, Martin only really discovered his voice as an artist when he was chosen as 1 of 8 artists in South Africa to join the prestigious Africa Voices Trust in 2015. During this time, Martin was awarded with the Africa Voices Trust Leadership Through Music Award at the Voices of Hope graduation concert and ceremony, with special guest Vusi Mahlasela. Since then he had the opportunity to be the opening act for artists like Karen Zoid, Parlotones and Francois van Coke.
In 2015 Martin co-wrote and starred in Konneksies, a film for the KykNET Silwerskermfees. Konneksies won Viewer’s Choice Award at this festival. Not only did the film win numerous international awards stretching from Los Angeles to Berlin, it was also selected to be showcased at Cannes Film Festival. In 2016 Konneksies was nominated for Best Shortfilm at the SAFTAS.
Towards the end of 2015, Martin co-founded Typecast Casting Directors – a film and commercial casting studio. He is also co-founder and facilitator of The Actor’s Toolbox – a five-day workshop aimed to educate actors and writers to become emotionally, physically and financially prepared for the entertainment industry.
Martin is currently writing a 40 episode show for radio, a feature film and television series. He will also make his television directorial debut in 2018.
Whether Martin is in front or behind the camera, be it writing, acting, singing, teaching or casting commercials – one thing is constant: he is in the business of storytelling.
